Surrey Police said officers were called to reports of a man being shot with the weapon at Manor Park Student Village, Guildford, at around 10:00 BST on Thursday. A former student at the university has been arrested and is in custody, according to police.

The force said the victim had been taken to hospital and was in a "serious condition". It added a "significant emergency services presence" remained at the scene. Ch Supt Jon Groenen said: "An investigation is now under way to establish the circumstances of the assault.
