King Charles III and Queen Camilla’s three-day visit to the United States begins. This marks the first state-level visit to the U.S. since Queen Elizabeth’s 2007 visit. It coincides with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.
Details of the Visit
The visit, taking place shortly before the U.S. celebrates the 250th anniversary of its independence from Britain, “aims to highlight the strong relationship between the two countries.” A statement from Buckingham Palace noted that the visit would proceed despite the attempted armed attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington on Saturday evening. U.S. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said he was fully confident that the royal couple would be safe, adding that Saturday evening’s attack proved that the U.S. security system works.
Very tight security measures were already in place for the King and Queen’s visit, but it is reported that these measures will be “escalated to a higher level” following the recent incident. When Trump visited the UK last year, most of the events were held inside Windsor Castle, and Trump was transported everywhere by helicopter. Charles and Queen Camilla will visit Washington, D.C., New York, and Virginia from April 27 to 30.
The royal couple will first meet with U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for afternoon tea on Monday.
The development has sparked widespread reaction in the international community. Diplomatic circles are closely monitoring the situation.
